The fact that mobile is overtaking desktop is no secret, especially since Google revealed that more Google searches are done using mobile devices compared to desktop as early as last year.
Then, earlier this year, Google also introduced a whole new series of mobile-oriented changes for AdWords, including the expanded text ads and responsive ads, as well as introducing a new text message extension in AdWords last month.
But things don’t stop here. This month, Google announced their plans to gradually introduce mobile-first indexing for their ranking system, which will follow their mobile-first approach when it comes to ranking websites on Google. What this means more exactly is that in time Google will update their search index so that the algorithms used in determining search results will start looking at the mobile version primarily.
If you already have a website which is responsive on mobile, then you needn’t worry about this change, as it shouldn’t affect you too much – provided that your website is optimised and that the content and markup you have on both desktop and mobile are equivalent. But if not, then we recommend that your New Year’s resolution for your business in 2017 will be to invest into a mobile website/responsive design and upgrade your existing ecommerce store.
